Two Alarm Wildland Fire Topples Radio Tower

A two alarm wildland fire toppled a tall radio tower, damaged a second tower, and threatened a third tower. The fire was reported at 11:51 A.M. this morning along the American River Parkway near Commerce Circle and Lathrop Way.

Sacramento Firefighters arrived on scene in about 10 minutes. A second alarm was called as crews immediately attacked the fire. One radio tower, about 250 feet tall had already fallen over and a second tower was leaning over at the top. Firefighters had to use caution around this tower.

Firefighters had to shuttle water back and forth from a nearby business park and access was difficult. They also had to battle the heat and fatigue that goes along with Firefighting in this hot weather. A small building at the base of the collapsed tower was destroyed by the fire. The building housed radio equipment.

These three radio towers are owned by ABC Radio and they broadcast Radio Disney to the Sacramento area. A Sacramento Fire Department Investigator is on scene trying to determine the cause of this blaze. The Investigator is looking into the possibility that something electrical inside the building caused the fire, but it is not known at this time.

There were no reported injuries. Firefighters from the Sacramento Metro Fire District also responded.
