Sacramento CERT Team Announces Academy

The Sacramento Fire Department is announcing the open enrollment for the Volunteer Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training Academy. The classes will be taking place over seven consecutive Monday evenings, September 14 through October 26 from 6 PM to 9 PM. The graduation ceremony will take place on the morning of October 31st. The classes will be held at the Public Safety Headquarters, 5770 Freeport Blvd in the Hall of Honor.

CERT training promotes a partnering effort between emergency services and the people that they serve. The goal is for instructors to train members of the community in basic response skills that can be used in their neighborhood, at work, or wherever they might be. CERT members are then integrated into the emergency response capability for their area.

If a disastrous event overwhelms or delays the community’s professional emergency responders, CERT members can assist others by applying the basic response and organizational skills that they learn through training. These skills can help save and sustain lives following a disaster until help arrives.

Some of the skills taught are:
Disaster Medical Operations
Light Search and Rescue and Fire Safety
Team Organization
Disaster psychology

Following completion of the basic class, there is more advanced training available for those that want to become active as volunteers with the team.

Participation is free. For more information or to obtain an application please go to www.sacramentocert.net (contacts page) or call 916-747-7202.
