At approximately 4:04 p.m., the evening of Sunday, July 12, 2009, the Freeport Elementary School surveillance video captured smoke drifting across the staff parking lot. A fire damaged the school’s playground structure, which is located in the south/east corner of the campus behind the pre-school classroom.
Investigators discovered a flammable material believed to be used to set the wood chip ground covering on fire. The gates were closed and locked at the time of the fire, therefore the suspect(s) had to climb a six-foot chain-link fence in order to get inside the play area.
