Homicide On Whitney Avenue

On Friday, July 10, 2009, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives received information regarding an unreported missing person who may have been the victim of a violent crime. The victim, a 66-year-old white male, was known to have recently stayed at the home of Charles Francis Gaskin (12-02-64) and Sandra Sheaves (06-27-69). Gaskin and Sheaves are married and their house is located in the 4900 block of Whitney Avenue in Carmichael.

On Saturday, July 11, 2009, Sheriff’s Homicide detectives and Crime Scene investigators served a search warrant at the Whitney Avenue home and discovered evidence which lead them to believe the victim had been murdered at the residence. Further developments in the case lead them to a site in rural El Dorado County where, shortly after 8:00 p.m. and with the assistance of the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department, the victim’s body was found. The body was recovered and returned to Sacramento County. The Sacramento County Coroner’s office will perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. The coroner will officially identify the victim and release his identity after notifying the next-of-kin.

Detectives believe Gaskin and Sheaves are responsible for the victim’s murder. The investigation is ongoing and detectives are still working to establish a motive for the crime. On Saturday night, shortly before 10:30 p.m., Sheriff’s Major Crime Bureau detectives located Gaskin at a friend’s home in San Francisco. Gaskin was arrested at the home by the San Francisco Police Department without incident. Sheriff’s Homicide detectives arrested Sheaves at her home shortly before midnight.

Both suspects were charged with murder, booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail, and are being held without bail.

Anyone with information regarding this crime is urged to call Sheriff’s Homicide detectives at (916) 874-5115.
