Civilian Saves Occupants Of House Fire

A civilian rescued about six persons inside an East Sacramento Boarding Home early this morning. The man, Santino Deanda was traveling on H Street, on his way to a nearby hospital, when he noticed the back of the home on fire. He pulled up, instructed his wife to call 911, and he went to the front door. He knocked on the door and eventually went inside. The home was full of smoke. He was able to wake the occupants and get them out.

One elderly man and Mr. Deanda were transported to a hospital suffering from minor smoke inhalation. They are both expected to be OK.

The fire started in the back of the home, on the exterior. It quickly burned up the side of the home and filled the house with smoke. Quick action by Sacramento Firefighters prevented the fire from spreading into the home. Sacramento Engine 4 was on scene in about 4 ½ minutes.

There were no other injuries reported and the fire is under investigation. If not for the quick action of Mr. Deanda, this could have been a tragedy. The Boarding Home did have many smoke detectors inside, however some of them may have not been operating. Sacramento Fire Department Fire Prevention Officers have been requested to investigate.
