On May 28, 2009, at approximately 1:10 a.m., Fernando A. Cabrera, a 26 year old from Sacramento, was driving a black 2001 Ford Mustang on westbound I-80 just west of Longview Drive. Cabrera was traveling in the far right lane at approximately 75 mph approaching the rear of a 1998 Freightliner tractor/trailer driven by Sergio Alcantar from Tulare. As Cabrera approached the big rig he moved his vehicle to the middle lane and then attempted to change back to the far right lane. Cabrera was unable to complete a safe lane change causing the rear of his vehicle to strike the left front of the big rig. The impact caused the Mustang to spin out of control and travel over an embankment where it rolled several times. The Mustang came to rest on its left side on the Light Rail access road located under the Longview Drive on-ramp to westbound I-80.
Cabrera’s female passenger, 27 year old Telma Martinez of Sacramento did not appear to be properly wearing her seatbelt and she was partially ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. Cabrera was transported to Mercy San Juan Medical Center with cuts and bruises and a possible concussion. Cabrera was released and booked into Sacramento County Jail for vehicular manslaughter and driving without a license. Alcantar was not injured in this collision.
It is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs is a contributing factor in this collision pending a toxicology report on Cabrera. This collision is still under investigation.
