On May 1, 2009, at 7:35 p.m., Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Bureau detectives arrested 25-year-old Sacramento resident Jamaral Smith for the April 29, 2009 murder of 20-year-old Curtis James. Smith was taken into custody without incident at a home in the 7600 block of Tierrawood Way.
On April 29, 2009, at 11:33 p.m., Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call regarding gunshots being heard in the apartment complex located in the 6700 block of Sunnyslope Drive. Deputies arrived and found James lying on the ground suffering from at least one gunshot wound to his head. Paramedics arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Investigators have learned James argued with, and was chased by, a suspect shortly before the sound of gunshots was heard. The suspect was then seen running from the apartment complex and driving away in a blue sedan.
After an exhaustive investigation Sheriff’s Homicide detectives developed information that leads them to believe Jamaral Smith is the suspect that shot and killed James. Following his arrest, Smith was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on the charges of murder and violating his parole.
The investigation of this murder is ongoing and detectives believe the shooting was motivated by a dispute between Smith and James.
