Speed And No Seatbelt – Driver Dies

On March 8, 2009 at approximately 5:41 p.m., Ilya Fanin, (pronounced Ely) a 26 year old male from Antelope was driving silver 2002 Acura Integra on westbound Elverta Road approaching Pinefield Way at an estimated 70 mph in a posted 45 mph zone. James Purdy, a 41 year old from Antelope was driving a brown 1997 Ford Van southbound on Pinefield Way turning left onto Elverta Way. Purdy had just begun to enter the intersection on a green light at approximately 20 mph when his vehicle was struck by the Acura. The impact caused the Acura to spin clockwise and come to rest facing eastbound on the north sidewalk area of Elverta Road west of Pinefield Way. The airbag deployed however, Fanin was not wearing a seatbelt and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Van came to rest facing eastbound in the #1 lane of Elverta Road west of Pinefield Way. Several witnesses stated that Fanin had passed them at a high rate of speed and entered the intersection on a red light.

It is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs are a contributing factor in this collision. This collision is still under investigation.
