On February 3, 2009 at approximately 10:47 p.m., Jarrett Goddard, a 27 year old from Orangevale was driving a blue 2004 Yamaha R1 motorcycle on eastbound Greenback Lane at Filbert at approximately 70 mph in a posted 45 mph zone. Officers in a marked CHP unit observed the motorcyclist as he turned quickly onto northbound Chestnut Avenue. The Officers attempted to make an enforcement stop on the motorcyclist but the motorcyclist accelerated away from the Officers attempting to evade arrest at a high rate of speed. As the motorcyclist continued northbound on Chestnut Avenue, he failed to stop for a posted stop sign at Central Avenue. Kathryn Lano, a 25 year old from Orangevale was driving a blue 1993 Plymouth Voyager on westbound Central Avenue and had just come to a stop at Chestnut Avenue. She turned northbound onto Chestnut Avenue when her vehicle was sideswiped by the motorcyclist. Goddard was ejected from the motorcycle and struck a wooden utility pole on the west side of Chestnut Avenue. Goddard was wearing a helmet; however, he sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collisions. Lano had complaint of pain to her right shoulder.
Both Goddard and Lano were driving on suspended driver’s licenses. Goddard has a court ordered restriction requiring him to have an ignition interlock device which the motorcycle did not have. Alcohol does appear to be a contributing factor in Goddard’s actions in this collision. Results are pending a toxicology report.
This collision is still under investigation.
