Minutes later a Sheriff’s K-9 unit responding to the carjacking scene spotted a white Ford Explorer in the area of 47th Avenue and 54th Street and followed it into an apartment complex. The vehicle stopped in the parking lot of the complex and the two occupants fled on foot. The K-9 deputy and his canine partner, Ado, chased after them on foot. The deputy described the suspects as two black male adults wearing dark clothing. Ado followed one of the suspects as he ran through the apartment complex and then across 47th Avenue. As Ado was running across 47th Avenue he was struck and killed by a passing motorist. A perimeter was quickly set up around the area by additional arriving deputies and Sacramento Police Department officers, but the suspects were not located.
Ado was a 5-year-old German Sheperd. He had been trained and certified by his partner in 2005. His partner is a 41-year-old, 14-year-veteran with the department who has been assigned to the K-9 unit since 2001.
