On January 28, 2009 at approximately 5:50 p.m., JB Maggard, a 48 year old from Rio Linda was riding his blue bicycle in the bike lane on eastbound Elkhorn Boulevard approaching Watt Avenue. Casey Snelson, a 28 year old from Rio Linda was driving a white 2001 Ford F350 pickup on private property located at 6737 Elkhorn Boulevard. Snelson’s vehicle was facing northbound and stopped at the posted stop sign ready to enter onto Elkhorn Boulevard. Snelson waited for two pedestrians to cross in front of his vehicle, he then accelerated to begin his turn to eastbound Elkhorn Boulevard. As Snelson accelerated he failed to see Maggard approaching and struck him, throwing him off of his bicycle approximately twenty feet. Maggard was not wearing a helmet and his head struck the pavement. Maggard was transported to Mercy San Juan Medical Center and is listed in critical condition.
Alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a contributing factor in this collision. This collision is still under investigation.
