Officer Involved Shooting On Gadsten Way

On January 7, 2009, at 1:36 a.m., a Rancho Cordova Police officer and a Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a 9-1-1 hang up call from a residence in the 10900 bock of Gadsten Way. After they arrived, and were approaching the residence, they were confronted by a 21-year-old male subject who was armed with a handgun. The officers ordered the suspect to drop the weapon several times. The suspect did not comply with the officers commands and pointed the weapon at the officers. Fearing for their lives, both officers fired their departmentally issued handguns multiple times at the suspect. The suspect was struck once in the upper leg and fell to the ground. The suspect’s 65-year-old grandmother, who was standing behind the suspect in the doorway of the home, was also struck by the officers’ gunfire. She suffered a single non life-threatening gunshot wound to her lower leg. Both subjects were transported to a local hospital and are expected to survive.

Investigators have determined the suspect, who formerly resided at the home, arrived and became involved in an argument with his grandmother and 44-year-old uncle. During the argument the suspect threatened both his grandmother and uncle with the weapon. The weapon was recovered at the scene and has been determined to be an air pistol with a mounted scope, capable of firing either BB’s or pellets.

In accordance with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department policies and procedures, the two officers (a 27-year-old/six-and a half year department veteran; and a 30-year-old/five-year department veteran) involved in this incident will be placed on paid administrative leave. The circumstances surrounding this incident will be investigated by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Unit, Internal Affairs Unit, and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.

After he is deemed fit for incarceration, the suspect will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail.
