Gold Miners Arrested For Claim Jumping

Two men were arrested for "claim jumping" after they were caught on another man’s gold claim in Foresthill Friday night.

Mark Alan Stuck, 51, of Elk Grove, and Steven Silva, 52, of Newcastle, were arrested by Placer County Sheriff’s deputies Friday night after the owner of Wildcat Mining Company waved down a deputy near his claim on Mosquito Ranch Road at 10 p.m. Using night vision equipment, a deputy observed three men on the claim with flashlights. Using a bullhorn, the three were instructed to come out of the rugged, steep canyon.

One man fled, but Stuck and Silva hiked out of the canyon carrying a metal detector, two rock picks and a hammer.

They were arrested for attempted grand theft from a mining claim. They were booked at the Placer County Jail and released Sunday with a promise to appear in court Jan. 27.
