CHP Officers Involved In Shooting In Sacramento
On January 4, 2009 at approximately 10:40 p.m., two CHP Officers in a marked CHP patrol vehicle were patrolling in the area of El Camino Avenue and Maryal Drive. As the Officers traveled south on Maryal Drive they observed a gold BMW in a parking lot on the east side of the roadway. The BMW was running and the drivers’ side door was open. The Officers pulled into the parking lot, facing the BMW. At that time, a suspect jumped out the window of a business (later identified as Mr. Haney’s Gameday BBQ) with a flat screen television in his hands. Officers got out of their patrol vehicle and drew down on the suspect with their service weapons. The suspect observed the Officers and continued to get in the vehicle disobeying their commands. The suspect momentarily put his hands up in the air while in the vehicle, then suddenly accelerated at the Officers. The CHP Officers, fearing for their lives, fired rounds from their service weapon at the suspect. The suspect drove out of the parking lot and continued westbound down an alley behind some businesses crossing over Avalon Drive where the suspect abandoned his vehicle. The suspect exited his vehicle and fled on foot. A perimeter was set up with the assistance of the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department. The suspect was located by a Sheriff canine unit approximately one hour later in the backyard of a residence on Verna Drive. The suspect was shot in the left leg and was transported to Mercy San Juan Medical Hospital. The suspect was identified as Trevor Hunnewell, a 24 year old from Sacramento. The criminal investigation is being handled by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department and the CHP. Both CHP Officers were not injured.
