On January 23, 2009, at 5:14 p.m., Rancho Cordova Police Department officers responded to investigate the report of gunshots being fired at an apartment complex which is located in the 11000 block of Hirschfeld Way. When they arrived they found a 42-year-old female victim with a gunshot wound to her shoulder. The victim told the officers she had been shot by her 28-year-old male neighbor who lived in the apartment above her. She also told them after the shooting the suspect went into his apartment and closed the door behind him. Paramedics transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment of her non-life threatening wound.
As additional officers arrived they immediately set up a perimeter around the complex and began evacuating the apartments surrounding the suspect’s location. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department’s SWAT team, Emergency Ordinance Detail (EOD) and Critical Incident Negotiation Team (CINT) all responded to the scene.
At 8:10 p.m., after multiple attempts to contact the suspect failed, the EOD robot breached the front door of the apartment and located the suspect unresponsive on the living room couch. Members of the SWAT team entered a short time later and found the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Rancho Cordova Police Department detectives will investigate this incident in an effort to determine what may have motivated the suspect’s actions.
