Lerwick Road Homicide Suspect Arrested

On October 31, 2008, at 9:03 p.m. Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon at the intersection of Marconi and Howe Avenues. The Sheriff’s Communications received a call reporting that two men in a van had been shot. Deputies located two victims, an 18-year-old Hispanic male with a gunshot wound to his upper torso and a 19-year-old Hispanic male with a gunshot wound to his lower body. Shortly after arriving at a local hospital, the 18-year-old was pronounced deceased. The 19-year-old survived his injuries.

According to homicide investigators, the two victims were passengers in the van that was driven by a 19-year-old. The three young men were driving near the 2700 block of Lerwick Road when they came upon three subjects who were on-foot. The driver stopped the van and an exchange of words occurred between the two groups. Sometime during the verbal exchange one of the subjects, who was on-foot, produced a handgun and fired multiple shots into the van striking the victims.


After an extensive investigation and follow up on numerous tips from the community, Sheriff’s Homicide detectives arrested Joseph Raymond Buttelo in connection with the murder of Gustavo Lopez. According to investigators, the motive for this homicide was gang related.

Buttelo was arrested at 7:15pm on December 12, 2008 on the 2600 block of Bell Street without incident. Buttelo will be arraigned on Tuesday December 16, 2008 at 1:30 pm in the Sacramento County Main Jail Court, Department 61.
