Who: The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit, in cooperation with the Richards Ranch, will be conducting a hazard reduction burn utilizing fire engines, handcrews, and a helicopter. Personnel and equipment will remain at the burn throughout the evening and into the following day. CAL FIRE resources will continue to check the area for several days following the burn.
What: CAL FIRE will conduct this 300 acre hazard reduction control burn in order to reduce overgrowth in the vegetation and provide a fire break that can be utilized in the future to stop or slow a major fire.
Where: The burn will take place at the Richards Ranch north of Englebright Reservoir.
Smoke will be visible from State Highway 20, and the communities of Dobbins, Oregon House, Smartsville, Penn Valley, Lake Wildwood, French Corral, North San Juan, Grass Valley, and Nevada City.
When: CAL FIRE is planning to conduct the control burn either Thursday, September 18th or Friday, September 19th. As the date approaches, fire officials will make the determination based on predicted weather conditions. The burn will start around 8 a.m. and continue into the late afternoon. Smoke may be present through the weekend.
Why: Vegetation Management control burns serve multiple purposes: the continued training of fire personnel, management of noxious weeds, and improved wildlife habitat.
