Non Injury Plane Crash At Columbia Airport

At 1504 hours Saturday we received a phone call that a plane had crashed into a stone embankment at the end of the runway near the air attack base. The pilot, 27 year old Carlton Cautinho, from Hayward, was not injured. He was a student pilot on his first solo flight. The plane was a rental from Flying Vikings flight school out of Hayward, Ca. Cautinho was the lone occupant of the plane.

Cautinho told deputies he misjudged the landing, overshot the runway, and was unable to brake in time to avoid the collision. The damage to the plane, a Cessna 150, was extensive.

The NTSB and FAA were contacted and advised of the incident. They authorized the removal of the aircraft from the runway and did not request any further action.
